Michael Alan Weiner, known professionally as Michael Savage is a renowned American radio host and conservative political commentator. He is also an author, an activist and a nutritionist. Savage hosts the nationally syndicated radio talk show “The Savage Nation” on Westwood one since 2013, which earlier aired on Talk Radio Network from 1999 to 2012. The Show became USA’s second most popular show garnering a 20 million audience, being aired on 400 radio stations in the US.

As a political commentator, Savage is known to have summarized his political beliefs in three words which are “borders, language, and culture” and identifies himself as a conservative nationalist. Savage is opposed to illegal immigration to USA and has stated his belief that progressivism and liberalism has degraded American culture and has been banned from entering United Kingdom allegedly for fostering hatred and provoking people to commit serious criminal acts. He has also authored several books on nutrition under his given name Michael Weiner.

Early Life and Education

Savage was born on 31 March 1942 in Bronx, New York to antiques shop owner Benjamin Weiner and his homemaker wife Rae Winner. He is of Jewish ancestry with his parents immigrating to USA from Russia. Savage has an elder sister named Sheila Rozzo and is the middle child of his parents. He had a younger brother named Jerome who passed in 1969. Savage lost his father to a heart attack in 1970 and his mother passed in 2003.

Savage attended Jamaica High School and graduated in 1958. He then enrolled into Queens College and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree in biology.  Savage attended University of Hawaii, Manoa from where he earned a Master of Science Degree in botany and a Master of Arts Degree in anthropology in 1970 and 1972 respectively. He also completed his PhD in nutritional ethnomedicine from University of California, Berkeley in 1978.

Career Rise

Savage started his radio career in 1994 with San Francisco’s KGO radio station, serving as a fill-in and later weekend host. In 1995, he moved to KSFO where he was given his own radio show “The Savage Nation” in the drive-time hours hat became the most tuned in show. By 2009, his show saw an audience of upto 10 million listeners and was broadcast across 400 radio stations in USA. The show was later broadcast on KNEW-AM (910 kHz) from July 2003 to September 2009 but Savage’s conservative views landed him in trouble at the network and he was let go. The network suffered a loss of listenership with his show being picked up by KTRB radio, in the afternoon slot until 2010.

Savage also hosted an hour-long version of “The Savage Nation” on television on the MSNBC network in March 2003, but his stint was flooded with objections and criticism from NBC employees and he was soon fired by the network in July 2003. Besides his media career, Savage is also an author and has written 40 books under his birth name on various topics ranging from politics to nutrition. Some of his best-selling books include “The Political Zoo”, “The Enemy Within”, “Abuse of Power” etc. He has also written on Alzheimer’s disease, AIDS, cancer, cocaine addiction, tree planting and nutritional cooking.

Personal Life

Savage has been married twice. He was first married to Carol Ely in 1964 to 1967. He married his second wife Janet in 1967 and has two children with her; a daughter named Rebecca Lin Weiner Yop and a son named Russell Weiner. Savage owns homes in Marin County, Beverly Hills and San Francisco, California as well as a property in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Savage adopted the last named of Charles Savage, a 19th century sailor, believed to be the first person to bring firearms in Fiji.
