Anna Kay Faris is a famous American actress, comedian and producer who rose to fame for her roles in several comedy films. Faris made her television debut with the 1991 TV movie ‘Deception: A Mother’s Secret’ and her big screen debut in 1999 with the film ‘Lovers Lane’. She received her break-through in 2000 with the comedy film ‘Scary Movie’ in which she portrayed Cindy Campbell and reprised the role in its sequels, ‘Scary Movie 2’, ‘Scary Movie 3’ and ‘Scary Movie 4’. She also portrayed the recurring character of Erica in the final season of the popular sitcom ‘Friends’.

Faris appeared in supporting roles in several films including ‘Lost in Translation’, ‘Brokeback Mountain’, ‘The Hot Chick’, ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’ etc. She was critically applauded for her work in the black comedy film ‘Smiley Face’ and also appeared in ‘The House Bunny’. Faris voiced characters in the animation films ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ and ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel’. Since 2013, Faris has been portraying the role of Christy Plunkett in Chuck Lorre’s Emmy award winning CBS sitcom ‘Mom’.

Early Life and Education

Faris was born in Baltimore Maryland on 29 November 1976 to sociology professor Jack faris and special education teacher Karen Faris and was raised in Edmonds, Washington after her family moved there she was 6 years old, when her father secured a job at University of Washington and her mother was hired by Seaview Elementary School. Faris was raised in a “irreligious but very conservative” household along with her older brother Robert.

Faris attended and graduated from Edmonds-Woodway High School in 1994 where she described herself as a “drama-club dork”. She later enrolled into University of Washington from where she graduated in 1999 with an English Literature Degree.

Career Rise

Faris debuted in 1999 with Jon Steven Ward’s film ‘Lovers Lane’ which was a moderate success. She gained nationwide prominence after appearing as Cindy Campbell in the 2000 horror-comedy-spoof parodies ‘Scary Movie’; a role she reprised in its sequels, ‘Scary Movie 2’, ‘Scary Movie3′ and ”Scary Movie 4’ in 2001, 2003 and 2006 respectively. Although all the ‘Scary Movie’ films were commercially successful, they were panned by critics.  Faris appeared in Tom Brady’s comedy ‘The Hot Chick’ and the drama-horror ‘May’ in 2002, both of which were hits. She later appeared in a supporting role in the 2003 Academy Award and Golden Globe winning film ‘Lost in Translation’ in which she portrayed the character of Kelly.

Faris’s next big appearance was again in the Golden Globe winning, critically acclaimed 2005 film ‘Brokeback Mountain’ followed by the rom-com ‘Just Friends’ in the same year. Her next appearances were in films like ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’, and ‘Guilty Hearts’ in 2006, and the critically acclaimed ‘The House Bunny’ in 2008. She also voiced Jeanette Millar in ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel’ and Sam Sparks in the animation ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ in 2009 and continued lending her voice in its sequels, ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ in 2013 and ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip’ in 2015. Faris has been portraying Christy Plunkett on the CBS sitcom ‘Mom’ since 2014 and also gave her voice to the 2017 animation ‘The Emoji Movie’. She has also hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 2011 and 2014.

Faris has been married twice. Faris first dated actor Ben Indra after meeting him in 1999 on the set of the film ‘Lovers Lane’. The couple married in June 2004 and divorced in April 2007 due to irreconcilable differences.

In early 2007, Faris started dating actor Chris Pratt whom she met in Los Angeles while working on the film ‘Take Me Home Tonight’. The couple announced their engagement in late 2008 and married in June 2009 in a private ceremony in the Indonesian island of Bali. Together they have one child; a son named Jack, born 9 weeks prematurely in August 2012. Faris and Pratt announced their legal separation on 6 August 2017.
