Katherine “Katty” Kay is a renowned English journalist and news presenter, based in Washington, USA who is best known for her work at the British Broadcasting Company Network where she presents several news bulletins including the BBC USA based World News show ‘BBC World News America’, the BBC World News show ‘Beyond 100 Days’ with Christian Fraser as her co-host. She also hosts news bulletins on BBC News Channel and BBC four.

Kay is also a best-selling author and has penned two books, ‘Womenomics: Write Your Own Rules for Success’ and ‘The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance—What Women Should Know’, both written with Claire Shipman as the co-author. Furthermore, Kay sits on the board of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IMFW) and has also blogged occasionally for the True/Slant website.

Early Life and Education

Kay was born on 14 November 1964 in Wallingford, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom as the only child of her parents, a British Diplomat father and his home-maker wife. She was raised in Blewbury, Berkshire (presently Oxfordshire) for a few years but spent a considerable amount of her formative years in several Middle Eastern countries, travelling with her British diplomat father.

Kay completed her primary, secondary and matriculation education from Berkshire, England. She enrolled into the prestigious University of Oxford, Oxford, England for her higher education and completed her graduation in foreign languages. Apart from English, Kay speaks Italian and French fluently.

Career Rise

Kay began working at the Bank of England but left her job soon after realizing she was not interested in building a career in Economics. She resigned from her position and moved to Zimbabwe, Southern Africa to work at an aid agency. There, she became good friends with BBC’s Matt Frei who convinced her to record an audition tape for BBC and pursue a career in journalism. Kay was hired by BBC as a Zimbabwe based correspondent of the BBC World Service in 1990. She then moved back to England and worked for BBC World Service radio, London and was posted to BBC News Television Tokyo, in 1992 and Washington D.C., USA in 1996.

After a brief stint at the Times news bureau, in 2002, Kay joined BBC once again, this time as a US based freelance journalist. In June 2004, Kay along with Mike Embley from London, co-presented the news bulletin for BBC World which was broadcasted on 230 stations across US and BBC America. She served as correspondent on BBC World News America in October 2007, with Matt Frei as the presenter. Additionally, Kay has appeared as a guest panellist on shows like ‘Meet the Press’, ‘Morning Joe’, ‘The Chris Matthews Show’, ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ and ‘Larry King Live’. She also serves as Diane Rehm’s substitute on her NPR show ‘The Diane Rehn Show’.

Kay dated her BBC colleague and former reporter Tom Carver whom she married after a few years of courtship. Carver currently serves in the capacity of the senior vice-president at Control Risks Group. The couple are parents to four children together, daughters named Maya, Jude and Poppy and a son named Felix Carver.
