Theresa Mary May is a famous British Politician who has been serving as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since June 2016, succeeding former Prime Minister David Cameron, under whom she served for several years. May also serves as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party. May is the second woman in the history of United Kingdom Politics to become both, the Prime Minister and the Conservative party leader, after Margaret Thatcher. May identifies as a one-nation conservative ideologically.

May began her political career in 1997 when she was elected as a Member of the Parliament for Maidenhead and went on to have a long career across various roles in the Shadow Cabinet. She served as a Shadow Spokesman for Disabled people, women and schools, Education and Employment Secretary, Conservative Party’s first female Chairman, Shadow Cabinet Transport Secretary, Home Secretary as well as Minister for Women and Equality and a National Security Council member. May was elected the Prime Minister following David Cameron’s decision to resign in the wake of United Kingdom’s vote to exit the European Union in June 2016.

Early Life and Education

May was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England, United Kingdom on 1 October 1956 as the only child of her parents, Conservative party supporter Zaidee Mary Barnes and Church of England clergyman Hubert Brasier who also served at Eastbourne hospital as a chaplain. May’s father later started serving as a vicar at the civil parishes of Enstone, Heythrop and St Mary the Virgin parish in Wheatley. May was raised as a devout Christian.

May completed her primary education from state schools and even attended an independent Catholic school for a brief period. She first went to the state school, Heythrop Primary School and later enrolled into the Roman Catholic independent school, The St. Juliana’s Convent School for Girls in Begbroke. She attended the Wheatley Park Comprehensive School and enrolled into St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in geography in 1977.

Career Rise

May began her political career in 1986 as a London Borough of Merton councillor and from 1988-90 served as Chairman of Education. From 1992-94, May served as a Housing Spokesman and Deputy Group Leader. May contested the seat at the North-West Durham at the general election of 1992 and the Barking by-election on 1994 but was unsuccessful on both counts. May tasted her first victory in the general elections of 1997 when she was elected as Maidenhead’s Conservative MP. She started serving as a Shadow Spokesman for Disabled people, women and schools as a member of the front-bench Opposition team of William Hague and served in the position until June 1999 when she was appointed in the Shadow Cabinet as the Education and Employment Secretary. after the 2001 Election, May was transferred by Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith to the Transport portfolio.

In July 2002, May became the Conservative Party’s first female Chairman and in 2002, was named Shadow Secretary of State for Transport while in 2004 she became the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. She was appointed the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons by Prime Minister David Cameron in 2005, who in 2010 named May as the Home Secretary as well as Minister for Women and Equality and a National Security Council member. May continued to serve under David Cameron until he resigned in June 2016, after UK voted to exit from the European Union. She announced her candidacy as the Conservative Party leader, receiving support from several cabinet members and was named Party leader on 11 July 2016. She assumed office as United Kingdom Prime Minister on 13 July 2016 and became the second Female PM of the nation, after Margaret Thatcher.

As per reports, May was introduced to investment banker Philip May, serving with Capital International, by the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto while they were attending Oxford together. The couple tied the knot on 6 September 1980. Owing to medical complications, they do not have any children.

A devout Christian May goes to Church regularly on Sundays and is a Church of England member. Additionally, the 1.72 meter tall  May is passionate about hiking, cricket, cooking and fashion. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November 2012 and takes daily insulin injections.
