Early Life and Education

DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles, California on 11 November, 1974 to legal secretary Irmelin Indenbirken and underground comix artist, producer and comic books distributor, George DiCaprio. DiCaprio is of Italian and German descent on his father’s side and German and Russian descent on his mother’s side. He was named after the Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci because his then pregnant mother was admiring a painting by the artist in an Italian museum when DiCaprio first kicked. When he was one year old, DiCaprio’s parents separated and he was raised by his mother in Los Angeles. DiCaprio first studied at Seeds Elementary School and later enrolled into Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies where he studied for four years. After completing his third year at the John Marshall High School, DiCaprio dropped out but eventually earned himself a general equivalency diploma.

Career Rise

DiCaprio made his television debut with the series ‘The New Lassie’ in 1989 and also appeared on the soap opera Santa Barbara and the 1991 sitcom Growing Pains. He made his silver screen debut with the film Critters 3 in 1991. In 1993, he started in the memoir film ‘This Boy’s Life ‘ portraying the life of Tobias “Toby” Wolff. He had a supporting role in the 1993 film ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ for which he received critical acclaim. DiCaprio gained nationwide recognition for his role in the 1995 film ‘The Basketball Diaries’ in which he essayed the character of Jim Caroll and the 1996 romantic drama film Romeo + Juliet in which he played Romeo Montague. DiCaprio became a world-wide phenomenon after starring as Jack Dawson in the epic romance film ‘Titanic’ by James Cameron, the highest grossing film of its time.

Since 2000, DiCaprio’s career achieved newer heights, establishing him as one of the most consistently successful and viable actors of his generation. Some of his most successful films include the 2002 films ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘Gangs of New York’ which became the first of his many future collaborations with Academy award winning director Martin Scorsese. DiCaprio received critical and commercial success for his roles in films like ‘The Departed’ in 2006, ‘Body of Lies’ and ‘Revolutionary Road’ in 2008, ‘Shutter Island’ and’ Inception’ in 2010, ‘J. Edgar’ in 2011, ‘Django Unchained’ in 2012, ‘The Great Gatsby’ in 2013.

After being nominated six times, DiCaprio won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Hugh Glass in the 2015 film ‘The Revenant’, also winning awards at the Golden Globes, The Screen Actors Guild Awards and BAFTA for the film. He also won a Golden Globe each for his portrayals of Howard Hughes in the 2004 film ‘The Avaiator’ and Jordan Belford in the 2013 film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

DiCaprio’s romantic relationships have garnered mass media attention. He is known to have been in relationships with British singer Emma Bunton, actress Bijou Phillips, models Emma Miller and Kristen Zang.
