Rise in Football Career
Lamine Yamal was born in Mataró, Spain, to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother. He spent most of his youth in Barcelona. He joined the renowned La Masia youth academy, where he quickly emerged as one of their most promising talents. Despite being younger than most players in his age group, he was promoted to the Juvenil A team for the 2022-23 season.
In September 2022, Lamine Yamal was invited by Barcelona’s first-team coach, Xavi, to train with the senior squad along with other young players. Although he hadn’t signed a professional contract at that time, he impressed Xavi and showcased his potential. On April 29, 2023, at the age of 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days, Lamine Yamal made his first-team debut for Barcelona in a 4-0 victory over Real Betis in La Liga. He came on as a substitute in the 83rd minute, registering a shot on target. This made him the youngest player ever to appear for Barcelona’s first team.
On May 14, 2023, Lamine Yamal won his first title with Barcelona as part of the squad that clinched the 2022-23 La Liga championship.
Lamine Yamal has also represented Spain at the youth level. He played four games and scored one goal for the Spain U-16 team in 2021. In 2022, he featured for the Spanish U-15 team, and in 2023, he represented the Spanish U-17 team in the UEFA European U-17 Championship. He scored four goals in five appearances as Spain reached the semi-finals of the tournament.
