Kevin Spacey Fowler is a renowned American film and television actor, who has gained international acclaim for his work in the multiple Academy award winning drama film ‘American Beauty’ in which he essayed the role of Lester Burnham.  Known mostly for his eccentric roles, Spacey is a method actor who is known for delivering superlative performances in Award winning films, including ‘The Usual Suspects’ which won him his first Academy award in 1995.

Spacey has delivered powerful performances in films like ‘Swimming with Sharks’, ‘Seven’, ‘L.A. Early Life and Education

Spacey was born on 26th July 1959 in the city of South Orange in New Jersey, USA as the son of his parents, technical writer and data consultant Thomas Geoffrey Fowler and secretary Kathleen Ann Knutson.  He was raised in Southern California along with his elder siblings, a brother, Randy and a sister, Julie and is of English, Welsh and Swedish ancestry.

Spacey studied at the Military Academy of Northridge and the Canoga Park High School in Los Angeles and later enrolled into the Chatsworth High School, Chatsworth, California, graduating as a co-valedictorian in 1977. He attended the prestigious Julliard School in New York City from where he studied drama between 1979-1981.

Career Rise

Spacey began his career with stage performances and debuted on Broadway in 1981. He made his television debut appearing in the first episode of the second season of the show ‘Crime Story’.  Spacey won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Uncle Louie in the Broadway production of ‘Lost in Yonkers’ in 1991. Spacey’s portrayal of Mel Profitt, a criminally insane arms dealer on the TV series ‘Wiseguy’ won him great critical acclaim and increased his fan base which resulted in him being offered roles in critically acclaimed films such as ‘The Ref’, ‘Swimming with Sharks’ and ‘Glen Ross’. Spacey’s convincing portrayal of mysterious criminal Verbal Kint in the film ‘The Usual Suspects’ won him an Academy award in the best supporting actor category in 1995. He also delivered strong performances in films such as ‘Seven’, ‘Outbreak’, ‘A Time to Kill’.

In 1999, Spacey appeared in the role of Lester Burnham, a depressed suburban father who re-evaluates his life in the 1999 Academy Award film ‘American Beauty’ which also won him the Best Actor Award. Spacey the appeared in critically and commercially successful movies like ‘Pay It Forward’, ‘K-Pax’, and ‘Beyond the Sea’, and ‘Horrible Bosses’ and also essayed the role of Lex Luthor in ‘Superman Returns’. Spacey started starring in the lead role of Frank Underwood in the Netflix original political drama ‘House of Cards’ in 2013. The show was cancelled after completing five seasons in 2017.

Personal Life

For several years, the media speculated that Spacey was gay but the 1.78 meter tall actor never addressed the speculation. In October 2017, Spacey finally came out after he was accused by actor Anthony Rapp for allegedly making a “se*ual advance” on him, which Spacey termed as “deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour”, in an apology to Rapp.
