He has several block buster movies to his credit. Early Life and Background

Karan Johar was born on 25th May 1972 in Mumbai, India.  His father, Yash Johar, was a reputed film producer and founder of Dharma Production and his mother, Hiroo Johar is a homemaker. Karan completed his school education from Greenlawns High School, Mumbai. Thereafter, he attended the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. Karan has a master’s degree in French to his credit. As a child, Karan was deeply influenced by the movies. He considers Yash Chopra, Sooraj R Barjatia and Raj Kapoor as his inspiration. The famous Indian movie director Yash Chopra was his maternal uncle and Aditya and Uday Chopra are his cousins.

Career

In the year 1995, Karan stepped into the movie world as an assistant director of the movie “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. The movie was directed by Aditya Chopra and is considered to be one of the most successful movies in the history of Indian cinema.  In 1998 Karan directed his first movie called “ Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. The movie was a block buster and established him as a successful director. Thereafter ,he has made many successful movies namely “ Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham”,” Kal Ho Na Ho”, “ My Name Is Khan” ,” Student Of The Year” and many more.  Apart from this, he has also produced many successful movies under his banner which include “Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)”, Dostana (2008), I Hate Luv Storys (2010), Agneepath (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), 2 States (2014), and Kapoor & Sons (2016) etc. He has also acted in many films like “ Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “ Bombay Velvet”, “ Fashion “ and many more.

In addition to this, he has also appeared in many television shows like Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, India Got Talent etc. He has also earned popularity for hosting the talk show “Koffee With Karan”. He has also played the character of “ Shrikanth” in a serial called “Indradhanush” which as broadcasted by Doordarshan in the year 1989.

Karan Johar has also earned fame as a costume designer.  He  has designed costumes for Shah Rukh Khan in large number of movies which include “ Veer Zaara”,” Main Hoon Naa”, “ Mohabbatein” “ Om Shanti Om” and so on.

In his glorious career he has been bestowed with many awards and accolades which include 1998 National Award for National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Filmfare Best Director Award, Filmfare Best Movie Award, IIFA Award for Best Costume Designer, IIFA Award for Best Story, IIFA Award for Best Director, Star Screen Award for Best Director and many more. The director spent his childhood in a family home at Malabar Hill, the property is now worth Rs. 22 crore.  In 2010, he bought a huge sea-facing property at Carter Road  (Bandra) for Rs.32 crore. The 8000 square feet duplex bungalow is known as  The Residency.  He also has an office at Khar.
