Justin Bieber is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor. He is the first singer to have had 7 songs from a debut album to be featured on the Billboard Hot 100.

The sales of Bieber’s singles and albums in the US total to nearly 45 million. He has sold almost 150 million records which makes him one of the best selling artists in the world. After Katy Perry, he is the second individual to have 100 million Twitter followers.

Early Life and Education

Justin Drew Bieber was born on 1^st March, 1994, at St Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada, to Patricia (Pattie) Mallette and Jeremy Jack Bieber. He grew up in low-income housing in Stratford, Ontario.

Justin’s parents never married. The couple split when Bieber was only a toddler. His mother was underage when she gave birth to him. She worked several low-wage office jobs and raised Justin as a single mother with the help of Bruce, Justin’s stepfather, and her mother Diane. His father is a pro-am mixed martial artist and a former carpenter. He currently has a place of honor in Bieber’s entourage. Through his father, Justin has 2 step-siblings.

Bieber went to the Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School, an immersion elementary French-language school located in Stratford. He learnt to play different instruments like the guitar, piano, trumpet, and drums when growing up. In 2012, he graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA from St. Michael Catholic Secondary School.

When he was 12 years old, Justin sang ‘So Sick’ by Ne-Yo at a local singing contest and came second. A video of that performance was uploaded by his mother on YouTube so that their friends and family could watch it. In 2007, Scooter Braun who used to work as a marketing executive at So So Def Recordings was searching YouTube for the videos of some singer. He accidently came across the videos uploaded by Bieber’s mother. He was impressed by Bieber’s singing abilities and so he tracked him down. Pattie, who is a devout Christian, initially did not want Braun as he was a Jew. She however relented after she was convinced by elders in her church. Justin subsequently travelled with Braun to Atlanta, Georgia and recorded demo tapes. A week later, he started singing for Usher. He then signed with Raymond Braun Media Group. In October 2008, Justin signed to Island Records. Pattie moved to Atlanta to be with Justin and Braun became the manager of Bieber.

Debut Album

When Justin was still recording his first album, the record company released ‘One Time’, his first single, to radio. It reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 12 on the Canadian Hot 100. It became internationally successful in fall of 2009 and was certified platinum in the US and Canada and gold in New Zealand and Australia.

The first release of Bieber, an EP called My World, released in November 2009. Later, the singles ‘One Less Lonely Girl’, ‘Love Me’ and ‘Favorite Girl’ were released to lots of success. My World was later certified double platinum in the UK and Canada and platinum in the US.

The song ‘Baby’ featuring Ludacris from the debut album ‘My World 2.0’ was released in Jan 2010. It was a worldwide hit and reached number 3 on the Canadian Hot 100, number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and the top ten of many international charts.

The movie released on 25^th December 2013.

Bieber began work on his 4^th studio album titled Purpose in mid 2015. He released the first single called “What Do You Mean?” from the album in August 2015. It became his first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. Justin also got a Guinness World Record as the youngest male artist to debut at No. 1 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second and third singles from the album titled ‘Sorry’ and ‘Love Yourself’ also topped the US charts. The album released in November 2015 and debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. Bieber went on the Purpose Tour in March 2016 but cancelled the shows after July 2017 due to unknown reasons.

Bieber has released many singles in collaboration with different artists, including songs like ‘Cold Water’, remix of ‘Despacito’ where Bieber sang in Spanish for the first time, ‘I’m the One’, ‘2U’, and ‘Friends’, etc.

Acting Career

Justin had a guest role in an episode of crime drama show ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’. It aired on CBS in September 2010.

The part-concert, part-biopic, 3-D movie ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ starring Bieber released in Feb 2011. It earned a gross of around $12.3 million on the opening day and topped the box office. The worldwide gross earning of the movie was over $98 million.

In Feb 2013, Justin appeared as a musical guest and host on Saturday Night Live. Cast members and critics panned his appearance on the show.

Personal Life and Trivia

Justin started dating singer/actress Selena Gomez in December 2010. They split up in Nov 2012, came back together some weeks later, and then separated again in Jan 2013. The pattern of reconciliation for a few months and prolonged separation continued till 2015.
Bieber is a baptized Christian like his mother. He is deeply religious and most of his tattoos are a depiction of his faith. He is anti-abortion but does not have any comment on abortion with regard to rape.
