Early Life and Education
Moore was born in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, USA, to Anne Love, a psychologist who also served as a social worker and Peter Moore Smith, an American Military Judge, on December 3, 1960. While her father was an American, her mother was from Greenock, Scotland. Moore has one younger sister named Valerie and one younger brother, Peter Moore Smith, who is a novelist.
In the early years of Moore’s life, her father was a paratrooper which meant that she and her family shifted locations often, as a result of which Moore attended different schools growing up. Moore later graduated from the School of Performing Arts, Boston University in 1983 with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts. After graduating, she moved to New York City and started her career with theatre.

Moore rose to prominence with a break out role in Robert Altman’s ensemble drama ‘Short Cuts’ in 1993, where she played a supporting character; artist Marian Wyman. Moore received further acclaim for her portrayal of Yelena in ‘Vanya on 42nd Street’. In 1995, Moore received her first Leading role in Todd Haynes’ ‘Safe’. Her performance as an unhappy suburban wife was well appreciated. The film established Moore as one of the finest actresses of her generation.
Moore established herself as a leading lady with the 1995 comedy ‘Nine Months’. Moore entered into a relationship with John Gould Rubin, an actor and stage director in 1984 and married him in 1986. The couple separated in 1993 and officially divorced in 1995. In 1996, Moore began a relationship with Bart Freundlich, while he directed her on the movie ‘The Myth of Fingerprints’. Together, they have two children, a son called Caleb (1997) and a daughter named Liv (2002). After being together for almost 7 years, the couple tied the knot in August 2003.
