Sidney Poitier: Well, the producers were all whites. Sidney Poitier: Well, I got to New York by hopping freight trains and all kinds of different, interesting ways. Poitier made his feature film debut in 1950 in No Way Out. All they do is they bring this panel of human emotions with them. And my mother had a different point of view. We can say the same of you. Tall for his age, he found work as a laborer, but without education, his prospects in life seemed hopelessly limited. There were no such things on Cat Island. So you cant make out anything. The acting came totally as an accident. I wound up in Georgia first. My oldest brother had stowed away on a motorboat that ran between Nassau and Florida. That is why I am sitting in this chair now. While leveraging his fame and resources to promote social justice movements not only in the United States, but in South Africa and his native Bahamas he chose his film roles carefully. And I learned that they had auditions every three, six months, or so. An older brother had already settled in Miami, and at age 15, Sidney joined him there. In stepped one man to help. I didnt say anything about dishwashing. That was one thing I wouldnt have told him. And there were, believe it or not, there were 13 major newspapers in New York City at that time. He continued to direct feature films throughout the following decade, helming such popular comedies as Stir Crazy, Hanky Panky, Fast Forward and Ghost Dad. The Defiant Oneswas a big step in your career, and you were nominated for an Oscar. But in those days the three dollars went quite a ways. I could hardly make out what the scene was. Thats where the admiration comes from, because they can also tell when that actor or that actress is not reaching home. He attended a one-room schoolhouse, but only sporadically, and learned little. In 1955, the 27-year-old actor was improbably cast as a high school student in the film Blackboard Jungle. I committed myself to that. I took a bus from Florida, and I went to Atlanta. I didnt see a car until I was ten-and-a-half years old. And they said, No chance. My mother had a different point of view. I dont know what the circumstances were, but they allowed him to stay, and I was sent to him. He left the house the following morning, and he went for a stroll. I would have been cultivated to respond in a different way, especially if I had spent those first 15 years of my life in Florida. He was a janitor in this gambling casino. You are largely a self-taught person, and yet youre probably one of the most erudite, intellectual people in your field. He was in his 50s, I would think, and the wear and tear of all his experiences with farming had weakened his back. And finding jobs was difficult. And he had to do it on that particular evening. Now by the way, Im reading my lines better. I wish him well. And she said, I want you to tell me about my son. And they sat down, and this lady began. And I said to myself, I have to rectify that. When we got to Nassau, it was somewhat different, but still. They could start working and assuming responsibilities for themselves over and above the farm that we ran. They thought I was a little crazy guy, but they got to like me. That he works, and he has always worked, and he gave them the name of the employers and all that, and he said he wanted them to know that. I did learn early that everything I want to do in life requires that I accumulate understanding, knowledge, know-how. But her water broke, thats a phrase, I guess, that you would understand. Anyway, this little house had to accommodate us all, and there were five boys and two girls in the family.
